Free Stock Photo Galleries for your Website

One of the best ways to draw attention to your website is to make it appealing to the eye. But if you are a small business chances are you don’t have money to hire a photographer or even to buy photos from stock galleries. Maybe you just want a beautiful wallpaper for your blog or just looking for inspiration.

If you need a photo of any kind and you aren’t able to pay for it, the best way to get one is to turn to one of the many free stock photogalleries around the Internet. These sites are usually maintained through advertising and the images are provided by photographers and illustrators that look for exposure for their work.

If you are going to use an image from this galleries be careful, most of them are free, but in many cases the use is restricted to personal projects or they ask to always credit the author or the site. Just be careful and read the terms of use before anything.

Stock.XCHNG
stock xchngIn February 2001 SXC was born as an alternative for expensive stock photography. The site has evolved into a massive community with over 2,500,000 registered users and around 400,000 photos online. Now the site is probably the most famous of this kind of galleries and it is under the management of Getty Images.

Registration in necessary to download the photos, but it’s free.

Morgue File
morguefileThe morguefile was created in 1996 as a collaborative effort between brothers Kevin Connors and Michael Connors, with Johannes Seemann. A morgue file is a place to keep post production materials for use of reference, an inactive job file.

The morguefile images are really free to use in creative projects, although they are not in the public domain. You are still responsible for the legal content of the images including model releases and property releases. The morguefile license is specifically for designers and illustrators to use the images in a creative process creating work of their own. This means in order to publish an image from the gallery, you have to alter it in some way.

Images in the gallery are at least 800 x 600 pixels.

Photogen
PhotogenPhotogen was launched as a free stock photo site in 2006, but it started as commercial stock photo site in October 2004. It provides free, quality stock photography for both commercial and personal use.

RGB Stock
rgbstockRGBStock.com is created by a group of enthusiastic photographers and graphic artists. Their vision is to build the best free stock image site on the web and give resources to people who can’t afford to pay for commercial stock photos.

Stockvault
stockvaultBorn in 2004, Stockvault’s purpose is to collect and archive medium and high resolution photographs that designers and students can share and use for their personal and non-commercial design work. The photographs and images are submitted by photographers and artists from around the globe.

Free Range

Freerange is an advertising revenue supported photographic community – photographers get paid when users click on the ads that appear next to their submissions. Images on the site are either shot by Freerange Stock, drawn from Freerange archives, or contributed by a talented community of photographers.

Images on freeimages.co.uk are taken specially for the site. A credit link to the site is required when using any of their images. The site is supported by advertising.

Design Packs

Each collection features a group of 15 images that share a common theme. All the images on the site are created by Darren Hester, a full-time web developer and amateur photographer.
